Marriage

December 6th will be our 18th anniversary.

We married the same year I graduated high school, and we never dated. That's a story in itself. I am quite proud to have reached 18 years. The credit is God's. We have been so blessed to be in a church that keeps marriage as such a high focus. I really can't say we would still be together without the learning opportunities we have had through our church. Marriage is a lot of learning and putting into practice.

This is the basics of what our church teaches on marriage.

- The most important issue in marriage is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This is huge.

- Marriage must be the first priority. (yes before kids, only second to God)

- Marriage is work. There is no such thing as a marriage that operates solely on chemistry or "soul mate" steam.

- Marriage requires teamwork and sacrifice.

- Dominance destroys intimacy and goodwill.

- We are very different from our spouses and must honor each others unique natures and work hard to meet each others needs.

Men’s needs Honor; sex; friendship; home support

Women’s needs Security; non-sexual affection; Open and honest communication; leadership

We must deal with anger every day and not go to bed with unresolved issues.

- Marriage takes faith. Many issues are too big for us and putting our faith in God gives us the grace to deal with issues properly as we invite God into our circumstances. Also, one spouse trusting in God and doing the right thing can turn the worst marriage around.
